A bad wheel hub noise when driving can be the first indication that your wheel hub needs replacement.
A bad hub bearing will often produce a distinct noise, such as grinding, growling, or humming that changes with vehicle speed, and can get worse over time. It can be louder when turning or when the truck’s weight is shifting from side to side.
What are the signs of a bad wheel bearing?
As well as a bad wheel hub noise there are a number of indicators that a wheel bearing is failing and needs attention. These include:
- Vibration in the steering wheel
A failing bearing will often cause vibrations that can be felt through the steering column.
- Uneven tyre wear
Damaged bearings can lead to wheel misalignment. This can then cause premature and uneven tyre wear.
- Excessive play in the wheel
If the wheel has excessive movement during manual checking, this means the bearing is likely to be worn out.
- ABS warning light
Because ABS sensors are integrated with wheel bearings, a faulty bearing will trigger an ABS warning light on the dashboard.
- Pulling to one side
If the vehicle is drifting or pulling toward the affected side while driving, your bearing may be faulty.
How to test which wheel bearing is bad?
There are a number of ways in which you can inspect the condition of wheel bearings.
If a bad wheel hub noise gets louder when turning right, the left-side bearing might be faulty, and vice versa.
A manual check involves lifting each wheel off the ground and spinning it manually. A rough or grinding sensation can indicate a bad bearing.
You can also check for wheel play by grabbing the wheel at 12 and 6 o’clock positions and then attempting to rock it. Any significant movement might suggest a bearing is worn-out.
How long will a wheel bearing last when it starts making a noise
When your wheel bearing is making a noise the issue should be addressed as quickly as possible. In trucks, the additional weight and stress can rapidly accelerate bearing failure, leading to serious consequences, such as damage to the hub assembly or even wheel detachment.
What to do when you’ve got a bad wheel bearing diagnosis
If noise or manual checks have suggested that you have a bad wheel bearing, then it’s essential the wheel is inspected as soon as possible. The vehicle should not be used until the bearing has been checked and, if necessary, replaced. It’s also important to check parts that are adjacent to the bad bearing.
