Foden trucks are no longer manufactured but many are still in use on UK roads. With a history stretching back to 1856, they were for decades one of Britain’s most loved trucks. Foden trucks were popular with drivers because they were able to deliver the goods whatever the terrain and could be relied on to carry on working for years.
The fact that many of the older models are still in service today, often decades after they rolled off the production line, is a testament to the quality of the vehicles that Foden made. With their classic good looks, vintage Foden trucks are loved by collectors and enthusiasts.
The company began life making agricultural steam engines from its base near Sandbach, developing some of the country’s first steam-powered lorries at the turn of the 20th century. In 1931, they introduced what’s regarded as one of the world’s first commercially viable diesel-powered trucks, the Foden F1.
The company continued to develop over the decades, introducing a popular new vehicle into the expanding 32-ton market in the late 1960s. The company was taken over by American firm Paccar in the 1980s, and independent Foden production ceased in 1998 and was replaced by DAF trucks badged as Foden. The Foden marque was finally retired in July 2006, putting an end to 150 years of manufacturing.
As well as their classic appeal, Foden trucks were loved by a variety of user types and were regularly commissioned by the British military. Known for their good handling, versatility and reliability, they are still in use today, particularly for local hauliers and in agricultural settings.
Genuine Foden parts
Foden trucks are still on the road and carry on delivering, but increasingly genuine Foden parts are hard to come by. At CV Hubs & Bearings, we always recommend using genuine replacement wheel hub components wherever possible. This is because wheel hub components are subject to a range of stressors when out on the road and need to be tough enough to cope.
Genuine parts undergo rigorous safety testing to ensure they’re up to the task and won’t fail prematurely. Fitting genuine replacement parts is ultimately more cost-effective over time as they are likely to last longer, reducing the need for early replacement.
